On Thanksgiving morning, I covered the canvas with layers of white flat and semi-gloss paint, intending to let the base dry while I went to have Thanksgiving dinner with my mother.
Before leaving, I started playing with powdered paint pigments, dusting different colors across the wet surface. I became distracted for a little while, and when I looked back, the pigments had begun settling into the paint in ways I hadn’t expected. I loved what was happening, so rather than touch it again, I let it dry exactly as it was.
Over time, some of the powdered pigment has softened and faded, subtly changing the colors from when I first made it. I’ve allowed that change to become part of the painting rather than trying to restore it. It has hung in my office ever since.
