Almost every time my girlfriend and I get together, I cook and she brings flowers or dessert. These tulips came from a local flower farm in Sandwich, simply wrapped in brown paper and tied with a ribbon.
I loved them and wanted to capture something of that simple gesture.
I built a thick, creamy background first, then added pinks, oranges and purples and used a fork to pull the colors through the wet paint, creating the lines and shapes of the flowers.
The painting became less about recreating the bouquet exactly and more about holding onto the feeling behind it—the flowers, the friendship and the gratitude.
